Benny Chan Muk Sing*****After assaulting his superior officer, well decorated cop Bill gets reassigned to the less glamorous Emergency Unit. Circumstances put Bill on the trail of escaped international criminal Professor, and his accomplice Birdie. The mechanics of this film are truly mediocre - it's a standard plot with cookie cutter characters. But the enormously talented cast, subtly humorous script, and one very well choreographed action sequence make this film quite enjoyable. Lau Ching Wan is in top form, Jordan makes the best of his clichéd character .

Chang CheA much lauded and analyzed top ten hit, it made superstars of its lead and director. They packed blood-soaked symbolism and dramatic power into the tragic tale of "Ma Yung Cheng" (also the film's Chinese title), who becomes the first Chinese to defeat a professional Russian wrestler, only to find fame more dangerous than he ever imagined. Internationally famous director John Woo served as assistant director on the production and now openly acknowledges its influence.

City of Life and Death
Liu Ye, Gao Yuan Yuan, Fan Wei, Nakaizumi Hideo, Lu ChangNo words can describe the horrors chronicled in City of Life and Death, a dramatic recount of the Rape of Nanking. Directed by Lu Chuan (Kekexili: Mountain Patrol), the film takes an unflinching look at the atrocities that took place during a six-week period starting December 1937, where mass amount of Chinese civilians were executed by the Japanese army, and where thousands and thousands of women were captured and raped, in the fallen capital of China. Bearing a concise yet aptly emphatic Chinese title of Nanking! Nanking!, the film is artistically accomplished and emotionally gripping. Nevertheless, the directors greatest achievement is to let the events unfold by themselves, in a matter-of-fact manner. Remarkably for a Chinese film on the subject, City dwells on neither sentimental excess nor nationalist indignation, and has even incorporated the perspective of a Japanese soldier amongst its major characters.

Empire of Silver
Taiwan's top tycoon and richest person Gou Tai Ming invested over US$10 million to make a film version of the historical novel "The Silver Valley" written by Cheng Yi. The novel is about the merchants of the Shanxi province - where Gou's ancestors hailed from - at the end of the Qing Dynasty of China. Monopolizing the country's financial sector, Shanxi merchants amassed an enormous amount of wealth, while their influence extended to most of Asia and even Europe, earning them the analogy of "the Wall Street of China".
Premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival 2009, the film adaptation titled Empire of Silver is produced by renowned film critic Peggy Chiao and directed by theater director Christina Yao. Obviously, to most audiences, the main draw of the film lies in its brilliant cast. Taking top billing is Hong Kong superstar Aaron Kwok, who was twice crowned Best Actor at the Golden Horse Awards for Divergence and After This Our Exile. Here, he is given strong support by Mainland veteran actor Zhang Tielin (the highly popular TV series Princess Returning Pearl), starlet Hao Lei (Summer Palace), and American actress Jennifer Tilly (Bullets over Broadway).
At the end of the 19th century, Lord Kang (Zhang Tielin) is the rich and powerful head of the Shanxi banking empire. He intends to make his son "Third Master" (Aaron Kwok) his heir, but the young man cares more about liquor and women than his family business, and not until his family is hit by a tragic incident does he reluctantly step up into the leader role. However, the idealistic Third Master often clashes with his father, for he does not agree with Lord Kang's ruthless ways and questionable business ethics. What's making their relationship worse is that Third Master still has feelings for the girl (Hao Lei) who has now become his stepmother after unwillingly married Lord Kang. Amidst greed, deceit, and jealousy, he must decide whether to follow through on his father's path when the country is at a turbulent time with threats of foreign invasion and impending revolutions...

Fearless Director's Cut
Ronny YuA moving and inspiring story of redemption and personal triumph in the face of great odds, Jet Li's Fearlessis the based-on-facts story of Chinese folk hero Huo Yuanjia (Jet Li). The son of a martial-arts master whose greatest strength was his restraint, Huo grows into an unbeatable fighter whose pride and thoughtlessness lead to a chain of tragic losses. After a classic wanderer-in-the-wilderness penance, Huo reinvents himself as a mature instructor of Wushu, a martial arts system that embraces all forms of fighting without preference or pre-judgement. He also becomes a populist symbol, at the dawn of the 20th century, of China's refusal to entirely capitulate to the boot of Western colonialists. Taking on whatever European, American, or Japanese fighter the outsiders bring in to demoralize the natives, Huo becomes a legend that, in real life, is still revered. Thrillingly directed by Ronny Yu (Warriors of Virtue), Jet Li's Fearlessis a dazzling action movie that transcends its breathless fight sequences with Huo's sportsmanship virtues, i.e., knowing when you've won by example, rather than by the fist. Jet Li is superb in the role. —Tom Keogh

Yimou ZhangDirector Zhang Yimou brings the sumptuous visual style of his previous films (Raise the Red Lantern, Shanghai Triad) to the high-kicking kung fu genre. A nameless warrior (Jet Li, Romeo Must Die, Once Upon a Time in China) arrives at an emperor's palace with three weapons, each belonging to a famous assassin who had sworn to kill the emperor. As the nameless man spins out his story—and the emperor presents his own interpretation of what might really have happened—each episode is drenched in red, blue, white or another dominant color. Herocombines sweeping cinematography and superb performances from the cream of the Hong Kong cinema (Maggie Cheung, Irma Vep, Comrades: Almost a Love Story; Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, In the Mood for Love, Hard Boiled; and Zhang Ziyi, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). The result is stunning, a dazzling action movie with an emotional richness that deepens with every step. —Bret Fetzer

Yimou ZhangZhang Yimou's (Raise the Red Lantern) tale of a plucky adolescent substitute teacher in a rural Chinese village, cast entirely with nonactors and shot on location, is an astute example of censorship politics. Taking on touchy issues with a veneer of can-do spirit and happy-ending fantasy, his film is at once rousing and eye-opening. Wei Minzhi is a stubborn young woman who takes a substitute teaching job in a tiny provincial town because they can't afford anyone else. When one troublemaking boy heads off to the city to help support his starving family, it's not a sense of responsibility that drives her rescue mission, it's money: She won't receive her bonus if any students are missing. Her efforts to raise money for the city trip pulls the class together in a sense of purpose, and even drives the lessons, but when she finally reaches the city she's shocked to discover an urban jungle of lost and runaway kids. Yimou shoots with an easy naturalism that suggests a well-intentioned docudrama in spots, due to narrative contrivances and a few self-conscious performances, but his compromises ultimately make his shocking look at China's rural poverty, adolescent workers, urban juvenile homelessness, and woefully underfunded educational system more potent. In the heat of the film's uplifting climax, the once-mischievous boy pulls the film back down to earth with his reflection on his big-city adventure: "I had to beg for food. I'll never forget that." —Sean Axmaker

One Armed Swordsman Trilogy
Chang Che*****One-Armed Swordsman (1967)

Cast: Jimmy Wang Yu, Chiao Chiao, Pan Yin-tse, Chang Pei-shan, Yang Chi-ching

Star Jimmy Wang Yu and director Chang Cheh revolutionized Hong Kong kung-fu cinema and broke box office records across Asia with this brilliant action epic where the loss of an arm not only created suspense but symbolized teenage alienation. Universally acknowledged as the start of a new era in authentic and exciting Hong Kong filmmaking, this first great yanggang (macho) film even prepared audiences for the power of Bruce Lee.

Return Of The One-Armed Swordsman (1968)

Cast: Jimmy Wang Yu, Chiao Chiao, Tien Feng, Essie Lin Chia

Director Chang Cheh truly proved that he was indeed the "Godfather of the Kung-fu Film" by mounting a follow-up which many say is even more accomplished and exciting than the original. Jimmy Wang Yu is back in the sequel to Chang Cheh's revolutionary hit, which many say is even more accomplished and exciting than the original. This time he takes on the "Eight Demon Swordsmen" to prove that one arm, attached to the right hero, is better than even sixteen.

New One-Armed Swordsman (1971)

Cast: David Chiang, Ti Lung, Li Ching, Ku Feng

Chang Cheh had made Jimmy Wang Yu a star in The One-Armed Swordsman. So when Yu moved on, Chang made David Chiang his all-new-one-armed hero in a film which deservedly won a prestigious Golden Horse Award for Editing. When the love of his life is kidnapped and his best friend is murdered at a gang's stronghold on Tiger Mountain, it's time for an amazing battle on a strikingly engineered moat bridge - which remains a particular favorite among true fans of martial art masterpieces.

Wilson Yip Wai ShunA man that will do anything to keep his criminal empire, a man that walks the fine line between ¡¥protect and serve' and the very element he stands against, and a man pushed to excel in the shadow of personal failure. None are left unscathed.

Chan's (Simon Yam) sense of justice and self-imposed personal duty tests his adherence to the principles he upholds as a policeman.

The head of a specialty police unit, he is nearing retirement, yet his adopted daughter is a constant reminder of a crime boss that won't go gently into that good night. Moreover, Po [Sammo Hung] has evolved since that time, becoming more and more of a kingpin and growing increasingly untouchable. Chan can't walk away without setting things right, but they have nothing on him. Knowing Po was behind the murder and destruction of evidence that orphaned his adopted daughter, Chan is torn by doing what he knows is right, yet he manages to keep his actions within the law despite temptation.

Ma (Donnie Yen) will take Chan's place as head of the unit, and joins shortly before Chan's retirement. Ma might be seen as a by the books cop, but he wasn't always like that and the escalating confrontation between Chan and Po tests his resolve to stay out of the shadow that haunts him. It's that same resolve that causes Chan and Ma to not see eye to eye on things when they manage to grab Po, but they won't be able to keep him. With time sifting through the proverbial hour glass both men's integrity is tried as Po's patience wears thin- the result has bloody consequences.

Simon Yam, Sammo Hung, Donnie Yen along with Wu Jing star in this new dark, gritty actioner directed by Wilson Yip.
